As light makes it way through the tree branches above, the background boulders lining the river are illuminated. The resulting reflections on the water offer a pleasing contrast to the cooler foreground colors.

When I came to this spot, I was entranced. I just stood there and took it all in. The undulating colors gave my mind a relaxing occupation to distract me from the day’s concerns. A steady flow of river water coming over a natural stone barrier offered a glassy smooth sculpture of glimmering movement. It amazes me how many different ways a river can reflect its surroundings. A passing cloud changes everything. Suddenly in the shade, the rapid moving water refracts the light where it reflected before. One of my favorite things is when sunlight breaks through a cloud mass from the side. This creates an exotic effect I like to call outdoor studio lighting. With everything else in only the ambient light of an overcast area, beams of bright sun shine on areas like a spotlight. As light makes it way through the tree branches above, the background boulders lining the river are illuminated. The resulting reflections on the water offer a pleasing contrast to the cooler foreground colors. Although not in direct sunlight, the wet stones in this painting glimmer a bit, revealing that the gush of the watercourse has recently wet them. The peculiar shapes of the water’s surface fascinated me as it made its way over and around the various riverbed stones beneath.
