I painted the moment of impact, with greenish gray water curling in the center and smacking the surface.

I was studying waves for a commissioned seascape in Carpinteria, California. I enjoyed a special place offshore from the bluffs not far from a favorite surf spot. At the base of the steep cliffs, I found myself watching curl after curl. I photographed about 72 waves in all. This one was my favorite. Its shape seemed so perfect. I painted the moment of impact, with greenish gray water curling in the center and smacking the surface. The hurled droplets sparkle, catching the daylight on their way over. The offshore breeze atomizes the seawater at the crest of the wave spraying a salty mist in the opposite direction. The two forces, wind and water, collide, turning grayish green to frothy white.
