The thunderous roar of enormous waves pummeling the rocky coast reverberated in my chest. Running down the trail in a frantic attempt to catch the sun before it disappeared and braving frigid winds that sucked the breath from my lungs, I leaped out of reach from icy spray. A winter storm off the coast whipped the ocean into a fury of swells that crashed onto Point Lobos, just south of Carmel, California. The sun’s rays shining through flying sea foam and droplets, created rainbows of color in all directions. Invigorated by the spectacular power of the waves and beauty of the sunset, I stayed until it was almost too dark to see my way back. Despite the numbing cold of the reality, the memory is warm and exhilarating.
