Beautiful eucalyptus trees against a dramatic sky

Rounding the bend in the curvy road, I saw them - white and bold against the dark, dramatic sky. A grove of eucalyptus, some with leaves glowing shades of orange in the evening sun, some bare and vulnerable, waiting for the fog to envelope them as the night swept over the mountain. Soaking in the last warm rays of the waning daylight, grasping limbs shiver in a slight breeze, as the ocean blows salty air across the hills. Fields of gold grasses shimmer, contrasting the deep blue grey clouds and recesses of the woods. I am mesmerized by the twirling fingers of fog as they reach over the tops of the mountains, pulling towards me. Lingering until the glowing orb dips below the horizon, a lonely coyote call in the distance reminds me that Montana de Oro is a piece of wilderness struggling to remain wild. --Susanne Renee Leasure
