This painting was inspired from a view I had atop the cliffs of Avila, California. Exploring further, I noticed the tide was changing. The tidal waters were on their way out. The ocean was revealing the precious beauty of its tidal marine life. The jagged rocks are home to many little creatures that cling to the hard porous surface and procure nourishment from the salty waters that gush over them, delivering microbes for food. How beautiful the starfish are with their almost crystalline exterior! Though not tropical, even coral grows here with its hard rubber-like exterior waving with each water heave. I watched for a long time, as the wave would speedily dash in against the rocks making awesome vortex like patters that, lasting only for a fleeting instant, would then blend back into the ocean’s whole. In the fraction of a moment just before a wave would hit the stratum, the would occur a beautiful translucent effect. It was an instant of peak beauty. My goal in this painting was to capture that moment.
