I spent the entire morning climbing the jagged rocks below the bluffs of Montana de Oro just South of Morro Bay. In fact, I could see Morro Rock from where I was. Fascinated, I chose to stop at a certain rock formation. It seemed to catch the waves just right. One large swell after another would heave its way into this long narrow channel. Just about every fifth wave would catch the receding water as it was flushing over the nicely shaped barnacle covered rock mound. A receding tidal gush flows over the rocks and collides with an incoming sea swell. Than after just a moment the water reverses direction creating a waterfall over the rocks and out to sea. In this painting, I chose to use deep dark colors in contrast to the orange rocks spattered with muscles. The seaweed is a very deliberate part of the composition as it adds to the feeling of motion. In addition, I used the green sea grass to trace out the flow of the seawater just prior to it returning to the ocean for the next swell. In this way, the viewer can experience the ebb and flow of the tide. Sparkles on the rushing water and a delicate translucent wave create a special moment experienced at the ocean. There were perfect moments when this action would combine with an incoming swell and produce a beautiful combination of awesome power and tranquil translucence. I wanted so much to capture that feeling in a painting. I got that restless feeling that can only be relieved by creating a successful composition of a wonderful moment or sensation. It is difficult to express the urge to paint. There is no relief until the sharing occurs. I am speaking of when I am satisfied that I have taken a work of art to as far as I can go (I speak in relative terms since I am never satisfied with my work in the complete sense) and the time has come for someone else to see it. If the painting evokes a sensation within the viewer as a record of that special moment, even better, an appreciation for my experience, then the thirst within me will have been quenched. My reward is in the expressions of those who connect with the work in some way and share the feelings whether emotional or intellectual.----Paul Leasure
