I stood on the beach and watched these graceful low flying birds glide over the water. I love the way the pelicans build up speed and then spread their wings as they hover over the waves, close as possible. The very tips of their wings will sometimes touch the surface in just the same way as a surfer, while on his surfboard skimming over the rushing seawater, put his hand on the water for balance and control. Putting skilled surfers on their surfboards to shame, the pelicans always catch every wave they desire and stay just ahead of the curl. Unlike those who fall prey to the closeout wave, the closing white caps never catch these graceful birds. - Paul Leasure
